E-Bikes in Fiji

Tips for buying and riding

E-bikes are changing the way people ride. With an electric motor that gives you a boost while you pedal, hills feel easier, distances shorter, and exploring Fiji becomes a whole lot more fun.

Why E-bikes?

E-bikes have been growing in popularity around the world — in New Zealand alone, more than 14,000 were sold in 2017. Here in Fiji, they’re the perfect way to cover more ground without exhausting yourself in the tropical heat.

Getting Started

If you’re brand new to cycling, it’s often best to learn the basics on a regular bike first. E-bikes are heavier and usually faster, so good handling skills are important. If you haven’t ridden in years, take some time to refresh your balance and control.

Buying Your First E-Bike

When choosing an e-bike, here are a few key tips:

  • Look for models with a maximum speed cut-out of 25 km/h — safe, efficient, and compliant with most road rules.

  • Choose pedal-assist e-bikes (not just throttle) — they feel more natural and ride like a standard bike.

  • Go for a mid-drive or rear-wheel motor — these are easier to balance and steer than front-wheel motors.

Get Comfortable with Your E-Bike

Before hitting the busy roads, get used to your e-bike in a safe, open space:

  • Try riding with the power off to feel the weight.

  • Experiment with different power assist levels.

  • Practice smooth stopping and starting.

  • Work on turns, balance, and obstacles with different assist settings.

  • Don’t forget to shift gears — low gear for hills and take-offs, higher gear for cruising.

Riding Safely in Fiji

  • Stay in control: E-bikes are quicker — always scan ahead, signal clearly, and give parked cars space.

  • Be visible at intersections: Drivers may not expect you to accelerate so quickly. Make eye contact before crossing their path.

  • Use the right gear: Low gear when starting at intersections or on hills to avoid sudden surges.

  • Passing others: Check behind, signal, and give plenty of space. Use your bell or voice to let people know you’re coming.

  • Shared paths: Go easy on the power, slow down, and be courteous to walkers.

Make Your Battery Last Longer

Want more distance? Use lower assist levels, pedal more, and always recharge your battery after use.

Whether you’re renting one of our e-bikes in Nadi or thinking of buying your own back home, e-bikes make cycling more enjoyable, practical, and accessible. They’re perfect for exploring Fiji — from markets to temples, beaches to backroads — with a little extra boost.
